A Winter Light

A winter light was realised as part of Mark Garry’s solo exhibition of the same title at the Model Home of the Niland Collection in Sligo.

When making the series of films and installations that made up this exhibition Mark employed a somewhat unorthodox working process, where the gallery becomes a studio, and many of the works that made up this exhibition are developed and generated directly in the gallery. This process of  experimentation continued beyond the opening of the exhibition. Mark Brought together a temporary collective of musicians to compose musical works and record an album that responded to the artworks and the conceptual framework of the exhibition

This is the sixth collaborative recording this collective have undertaken that involves this methodology where the gallery or art space is transformed to become a fully functioning temporary recording studio. Mark works with a diverse collective of international musical collaborators made up of Karl Burke, Eileen Carpio, Sean Carpio, Mark Garry, Nina Hynes and Fabien Lesure. Who travel to these various locations and respond to a new set of conceptual criteria with each situation. For each collaboration Mark or members of the collective invite new musicians, to become part of these projects. For A Winter Light, the collective were joined by Oliver Alcorn, Claudia Schwab, Robert Stillman, Paidrig Murphy and Cillian Murphy.

Prior to their arrival in Sligo, each of the musicians were made aware of Mark’s approach to the exhibition both conceptually and materially. This set of concerns was used as a guiding framework and each participant was asked to bring one musical response or idea to the project. These ideas could then be expanded upon or completely new works could be generated during the project. This recording is a mixture of both of these methods, where some works came to the project in an almost complete form and some were completely generated by the collective.

The Music on this recording was created over four remarkably intense fun-filled days; involving an incredible sharing of individual skill and energy in service of the collective whole.

This project involve a live public sharing and these recordings were released on Vinyl and digital formats by Sligo based label Bluestack Records.
